Welcome to the July 18 Weekly Summary with Mark Mullen. This week Mark speaks about Georgian Dream’s candidate for President Giorgi Margvelashvili’s resignation. Margvelashvili named his deputy Tamar Sanikidze on the Education Minister’s post. Mark also speaks about Lasha Tughushi’s statement, that the Interior Ministry discovered five thousand illegal recordings.
In addition, this week Tbilisi city court released Rusudan Kervalishvili, Maia Rcheulishvili and Ivane Tsaguria on bail. Mark mentions the investigation of Interior Ministry about Mamuka Mikautadze suicide and also discusses the Presidential candidates too, emphasizing that Paata Burchulaze refused to participate in the elections.
Other topics of the week are: Tbilisi’s water park was burned; Tea Tsulukiani refused to dismiss Kbilashvili despite Saakashvili’s request; Court sentenced Tengiz Gunava 4 years imprisonment; Irakli Alasania about Sochi security and much more – so sit back and enjoy.

The original audio podcast version of this content can be found at TBLpod.com, recorded locally on Rustaveli Avenue. Each week Mark and his excellent team of researchers, experts and analysts put together a summary of what has happened in Georgia and why. Years of experience and contacts in this country help them provide a context for the news each week. Their discussions give a uniquely candid perspective, which is difficult to find anywhere else, even in Georgian, and which [we must note] is their personal opinion and not that of any organization or company they or we may work for or represent, including Palitra. For this reason Mark and his team have an audience from all over the world and, even more interestingly, a devoted audience of Georgian listeners interested in their outlook on current events. Thanks for tuning in. Please come back next week.

New ways, New means...
17 October, 2013
Georgia is a republic – socialist, presidential or parliamentary – whatever! Georgia is a democracy – unreal, partial or transitional – who cares! Georgia is a state – ancient, modern or futuristic – why to bother? Georgia is a territory – whole, split or undefined – when to get a clue? Georgia is a terra firma – steady, tremulous or shaky – where to get the idea?

Georgians need to start judging their bosses

There is a new term being used more and more in the west - “Big Data”. This means not one or twenty measurements but a very large number of measurements or data points. These can come from many points for those who know how to get them, and can clarify a great deal in a graph or a map or used in other ways. In large organizations it is now very common to use them to judge employees but more importantly to judge managers. It is also being used to judge municipal services and many other things that a government does. With it, you can make decisions based on data rather than guesses. All over Europe and North America and increasingly in Asia, businesses and governments are using big data to improve judgment and decision making.
