Welcome to the October 17 Weekly Summary with Mark Mullen. This week Mark speaks about the arrest of former Defense Minister Davit Kezerashvili through Interpol. The Georgian side demands that Kezerashvili be extradited from France. The former official has been charged with several crimes.
This week Bidzina Ivanishvii stated that if it becomes necessary Georgia will refuse to take part in the Sochi Winter Olympics, but more time is needed to make a decision. Ivanishvili also said that the name of the new Prime Minister will be announced several days after Presidential elections.
In addition, Mark mentions a number of rallies held in several cities of Georgia and also a concert in Tbilisi to protest Russian occupation and Georgia’s participation in Sochi Olympic Games.
Other topics of the week are: Mikheil Saakashvili visited Dvani and addressed the locals, living on the border; Hungarian Prime Minister avoided answering a question about Zurab Adeishvili; Vano Merabishvili about Nino Burjanadze’s plans; Clashes in Batumi during Davit Bakradze’s election campaign and much more – So sit back and enjoy.

The original audio podcast version of this content can be found at TBLpod.com, recorded locally on Rustaveli Avenue. Each week Mark and his excellent team of researchers, experts and analysts put together a summary of what has happened in Georgia and why. Years of experience and contacts in this country help them provide a context for the news each week. Their discussions give a uniquely candid perspective, which is difficult to find anywhere else, even in Georgian, and which [we must note] is their personal opinion and not that of any organization or company they or we may work for or represent, including Palitra. For this reason Mark and his team have an audience from all over the world and, even more interestingly, a devoted audience of Georgian listeners interested in their outlook on current events. Thanks for tuning in. Please come back next week.

Leaders, leaders, leaders...
24 October, 2013
I have said this many times, and I am saying it again... Georgia is a classic example of a country whose most valuable production is a leader as such. It is the most popular commodity we have ever created industrially. We produce leaders. That’s what we do! We are the most prolific nursery of leaders in the entire human world. All of us are leaders – the entire nation!

This is the president Georgia really needs
24 October, 2013
To leave aside the current candidates and what people think of them, here are some thoughts on the ideal next president. The system is new. In the past, under the constitution passed illegally and in three days on 6 February 2004, the president was the supreme executive power in Georgia and had significant power even over the parliament and judiciary. Informally, the president had power over what and whoever he wanted. And power was wielded informally among deputies who would be rotated around positions, but their power had largely to do with their inner circle relationship with the president.
