This past week saw very important Iranian presidential elections. The coverage on the Georigan news was slight, it was treated like the typical international news: Obama said something about something, big shots meet in Switzerland, people die in Syria, some flood in Paraguay or Bangladesh. There wasn't much context, or what this means for Georgia.

How does society reconcile the technological benefits and privacy impacts of new technology? Deep packet inspection is just one seemingly neutral technological application that can have a significant impact on privacy rights and other basic civil liberties, especially as market forces, the enthusiasm of technologists and the influence of national security interests grow stronger.

The protests in Istanbul were a surprise to most. Turkey is a big successful regional power but people had mainly gotten used to thinking of it in terms of its relations to Syria, to NATO and the EU, to Palestine and Israel. Things seemed quiet at home. Then they weren’t. The geographical and emotional center of Istanbul is a big square called Taksim.

Meat is animal flesh that is eaten as food. Humans are carnivorous species. I would even say that we are omnivorous. Humans have hunted and killed animals for meat since prehistoric times. The advent of civilization allowed the domestication of animals and eventually their use in meat production on an industrial scale – this is at least how it is defined in reference books.

With the flick of a switch, Philips Electronics may have just dramatically lowered America’s electric bill. In September 2009 the Dutch electronics giant became the first to enter the U.S. Department of Energy’s L Prize competition, which seeks an LED (light emitting diode) alternative to the common 60-watt light bulb. Sixty-watt lights account for 50% of the domestic incandescent market; if they were replaced by LED bulbs, the U.S. could save enough electricity per year to light 17.4 million households. If Philips won the L Prize, back in 2009 it could claim a cash award and Federal purchasing agreements worth about $10 million. Philips’ LED bulb emits the same amount of light as its incandescent equivalent but uses less than 10 watts and lasts for 25,000 hours — or 25 times as long. The diodes emit light whenever electrical currents are passed through them without creating noticeable heat.

The main problem is not that there is little foreign investment, it is that those businesses with money in Georgia aren't spending it or putting it in the economy by expanding or establishing new businesses. The reason they aren't doing this is fear.

People who care about Georgia need to come to an understanding about what happened on Friday 17 May 2013 in Tbilisi. A group of people decided to demonstrate against homophobia and a very large mob of people chased them away and in some cases beat them severely. There were many police but they were not successful in managing the crowds.
