Georgia’s ranking in an annual survey of global press freedom by Freedom House has improved, but the country still remains in the category of “partly free.” Each of the 196 countries and territories examined in the survey are assigned a rating between 0 and 100. Countries scoring from 0 to 30 are given status of having “Free” media; from 31 to 60 - “Partly Free” and 61 to 100 - “Not Free”.

Last week our Publishing House Palitra Media had an unexpected honorable guest, a modest Chinese diplomat, who was interested in having a closer look at the work of our holding. Such visits to our holding are quite frequent. Certainly we readily satisfied the request of Mr. Lo Shisun, the First Secretary of Chinese Embassy. In two days, Mr. Shisun returned with His Excellency, newly appointed Ambassador of China to Georgia Chen Jianfu.

Non-governmental sector to the Authorities: speed up review of draft law
Media and civil society sector request the Parliament to speed up consideration of draft law on media transparency. The issue concerns both the Governmental initiative and the package prepared by experts. The experts call on the Authorities to study the two initiatives in parallel with active involvement of themselves and NGO sector.

Georgian TV Center cut off Independent TV-Radio Company Trialeti from the transmitter located on Gori TV tower. Reportedly, the move is a result of a three-month-old debt accrued by the Company. However, the Company interprets it as a repression on the part of the Authorities.
U.S. ambassador to Georgia, John Bass, said the draft law on transparency of owners of broadcasters, currently under consideration in the Parliament, was a step forward to improving media environment in the country.
