On Tuesday, Los Angeles city attorney Mike Feuer told journalists that police had been called to Daphne Joy's condominium on 23 June, arriving after 50 Cent had already departed. According to the victim, 50 ransacked the apartment, broke down the door to the bedroom where she was hiding and kicked her. Joy is 50 Cent's ex-girlfriend: they previously dated for three years, and have a child together, the Guardian reports.
Yesterday, lawyer Scott Leemon issued a statement pointing out that 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, "has not been arrested and there is no warrant outstanding for his arrest". This is true: although 50 was charged with five misdemeanours, he will not be arraigned until 22 July. "Curtis Jackson denies these allegations as made against him," Leemon said. "We have been in contact with the LA City Attorney's Office and are currently conducting our own investigation … Out of respect for the legal process, we will not be commenting any further at this time."
If convicted on all charges, 50 Cent faces a sentence of up to five years in jail, plus $46,000 (£30,500) in fines. "Regardless of perceived celebrity or notoriety, domestic violence is a serious crime and alleged perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by this office," the city attorney said.
Five years ago, 50 Cent met police following a dispute with a different ex-girlfriend. Shaniqua Tompkins claimed that the rapper set a fire that engulfed the house where she was staying in Long Island and although no one has ever been charged with the arson, police denied 50's claim that he had been "cleared" in the matter, the Guardian informs.
After multiple delays, 50 Cent's fifth album, Street King Immortal, is expected before the end of the year.
