Merab Gorgadze – formerly released from detention with the status of political prisoner – was arrested by the police during a protest rally outside Sheraton Batumi Hotel - staged against the National Movement party primary event in the city – after he threw eggs in the direction of party member Mikheil Matchavariani, followed by clashes between the police and protesters. Interior Ministry Adjara Main division Head Valerian Telia told Palitra TV Gorgadze was arrested for “violating public order”.
Another protester Merab Ghoghoberidze – who attempted to break through the police cordon before the primary event began - was also arrested later. His first attempt to break through was prevented by the police, but Ghoghoberidze returned to the scene and asked the police officers to let him in. He was allowed to do so but arrested later.
