The US President joined players from the Women's National Basketball Association and a team of young girls in a shoot-out against an all-male team.
Despite his love of sport and fondness for basketball, he needed 15 attempts to get the ball through the hoop, with a final score of two baskets in 22 shots, the Telegraph reports.
“Oh, man," Mr Obama said as his shots kept hitting the rim. "Come on. Come on. Did you see that?"
He then handed the ball to a boy and asked for help. "He couldn't make one. I had to help him out," said Kahron Campbell, 10.
The White House shrugged off the president's 9.1 per cent success rate.
"Well, I have not spoken to him about that," spokesman Jay Carney said. "But, you know, the president doesn't get to practice probably as much as he'd like to."
The event was part of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, which attracted 30,000 children and parents to the South Lawn for a day of festivities.
Mr Obama is an avid basketball fan and also plays regularly.
Last March he took David Cameron to watch Western Kentucky University take on Mississippi Valley State in the opening game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Basketball tournament known as "March Madness", the Telegraph reports.
However, given his performance of Monday, he should maybe consider changing his sport of choice to football. The president showed off his ball skills at the White House last week.
In February, Mr Obama played golf with world No. 1 Tiger Woods.
